Casualty’s Barney Walsh reveals struggle over tragic death amid ‘questioning career’

A new 12-part Casualty chapter is on its way, and this time Cam Mickelthwaite (Barney Walsh) is set to take centre stage. The character will be explored in-depth in the new episodes, titled Storm Damage, with fans finally finding out why the nurse is so timid and shy.

Portrayed by Barney, 26, the character was introduced back in 2023 but viewers haven’t got to know too much about the medic and his story. The actor, who is the son of The Chase presenter Bradley Walsh, has revealed that Cam’s personality is to be explored in Storm Damage, and teased he had “no idea” the character was to be “taken in this direction”.

“In the storyline that’s about to come out, I’ve been able to delve deep, figure out the reasons why he’s built that way, and why he’s so scared. I’d no idea that he was going to be taken in this direction!” Barney told What To Watch.

In the first episode of Storm Damage, titled Sinking Ships – Day 1, Cam struggles to get to work during a red weather warning. Once he gets to work, he is faced with his toughest shift in the hospital yet, with the pressure piling up on him. One difficult situation involving an injured infant and her mother proves especially difficult Cam.

An “unfortunate freak accident” involving the baby occurs and she is rushed to hospital. The team is sadly unable to save the baby, named Chloe, which has a lasting impact on the entire team.

“It affects everyone in the ED, but especially Cam, as he’s never had to deal with an infant death before. During all this turmoil a familiar face that he hasn’t seen for a long time turns up at the hospital,” Barney teased, referring to newcomer Jamie Cleveland, who is played by ex-Emmerdale star Ryan Hawley.

When asked whether Cam is questioning his career in the hospital, Barney revealed his character comes in “more confident” at the start of Storm Damage, and even tells his colleagues he’s “ready to step up”. However, so much happens in a “short space of time” he questions his ability to step up.
